Ancient Egyptian sun-god. In the 14.century B.C. the pharaoh Amenophis IV changed his name to Aknaton. Previously the priests of Thebes had been all-powerful with their worship of Amen-Ra, a god who combined the sun-god Ra with the human-headed Amen. Though King of the Gods. Amen-Ra was one of many gods, which included the pharaoh himself, in Egyptian polytheism. Aknaton, however, in promoting the worship of Aton regarded him as the only god, thus introducing the unorthodox idea of monotheism. On his instructions the name of Amen-Ra was obliterated from every stone inscription in Egypt, and so too was any reference to “ gods “ in the plural. In pictures of the new and only god, Aton was represented as !he disc of the Sun with rays, each ray ending in a human hand.
